ALBERTA CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION
Over the past decade, the severity of illnesses and the number of children who need the Alberta Children’s Hospital have risen dramatically. In fact, over that time, there has been a 44 percent increase in young patients, with over 102,000 children requiring specialized care from the hospital last year alone.
The Alberta Children’s Hospital is committed to reducing suffering for these children, teens and their families so they can achieve their highest potential. Our mission is to inspire our community to invest in excellence in child health, research and family centred care.
Support from our community means that whether a child is suffering from cancer, a brain disorder or life-threatening traumatic injury, they along with their family will receive the best care possible when they need it most.
While no one wants to think of a child needing palliative care, it is the reality for many families whose children face incurable disease. Afterall, children are at the beginning, not the end, of life and issues surrounding their death are especially complex and heart-wrenching.
Almost 10 years ago, our community recognized the extraordinary needs of families facing the unimaginable – losing a child – rallied together to build the beautiful facility that is Rotary Flames House. Today the House, located next door to the Alberta Children’s Hospital, is one of only six pediatric hospices in Canada and the only one in Alberta.
Each year, the team of specialists at the House helps more than 100 families of children with complex, life-limiting illness – providing them with the physical, emotional, social and spiritual care they require. In addition to offering support during a child’s end-of-life journey, Rotary Flames House provides much-needed respite care – a special kind of temporary relief for families with children whose serious illness requires complicated, round-the-clock care. Respite care enables these families to rest and recharge while knowing their child’s care continues uninterrupted – a gift many of them say is invaluable. Community funding ensure that whether measured in years, months, weeks or days; Rotary Flames House can help make the most of every child’s life.
